SpeakersLarge-eddy simulations of high-Reynolds number wall-bounded flowsUgo Piomelli, Senthil Radhakrishnan Liejun Zhong and Ming L The application of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) to high Reynolds number, wall-bounded flows is hampered by the grid spacing required to resolve adequately the wall layer. The cost of an LES in which the wall-layer structures are computed accurately makes calculations of flows of engineering or geophysical interest impossible, even on today's most powerful computers. An alternative approach is to model the wall layer, including only the global effect of its eddies on the outer flow. Two approaches are possible: bypassing this region altogether using wall functions, or simulating the near-wall region in a Reynolds-averaged, sense. In this talk, the advantages, shortcomings and requirements of these approaches will be discussed and illustrated using recent results from calculations of high Reynolds number flows in oceanographic and engineering applications. |
